Η ΘΥΕΛΛΑ ΤΗΣ ΗΡΑΣ...On its way to Italy, a storm sent by Hera (who had not forgotten the outrage she suffered at Mount Ida on the occasion of the Judgement of Paris), carried Aeneas' fleet to Libya, where there was a city Carthage, ruled by Queen Dido.

ΑΙΝΕΙΑΣ και ΔΙΔΩ..Aeneas impressing Queen Dido with war anecdotes and accounts on Trojan bravery and Achaean treachery.

Στο Νησί των ΚΥΚΛΩΠΩΝ...This is part of the adventures that Aeneas related to Dido: Looking for rest Aeneas and his crew crept to the shores of the Cyclopes, an unfriendly and anthropophagous race.

Ικεσίες της ΔΙΔΩ...Dido begged: "I implore you, and by our union of hearts, by our marriage hardly begun, if I have ever helped you at all, if anything about me pleased you, be sad for our broken home, forgo your purpose, I beg you, unless it is too late for prayers of mine!"

ΑΙΝΕΙΑΣ...Here are Dares and Entellus, who participated in the games held by Aeneas in Sicily.Dares was defeated in a boxing match by Entellus (Vir.Aen.5.368ff.)

ΑΙΝΕΙΑΔΑ..Δώρα φέροντες.... A Trojan embassy comes with gifts before King Latinus of Latium.The newcomers offer alliance along with the relics from Troy.The king, remebering and oracle, offers the hand of his daughter Lavinia to the absent Aeneas......

ΑΙΝΕΙΑΔΑ...The old Arcadian Evander, now king of Pallantium on the banks of the river Tiber, embraces his son Pallas as he departs to join Aeneas in his war against Turnus..

ΕΥΡΥΑΛΟΣ και ΝΙΣΟΣ..... Euryalus and Nisus, lovers and warriors in the army of Aeneas attacked by night the Rutulian camp and caused a great carnage, as the enemy was sleeping after heavy drinking.But on their return they were discovered by a cavalry force of three hundred men, and their commander Volcens killed Euryalus.Nisus died after killing Volcens.

ΑΙΝΕΙΑΔΑ...Μονομαχία.... Challenged to fight a single combat, Pallas 6 hurls his spear at Turnus but misses, before Turnus' spear kills him.Having spoiled the corpse, Turnus takes Pallas 6 golden baldric.

ΑΙΝΕΙΑΔΑ.Ο Θάνατος της ΚΑΜΙΛΛΑΣ..Camilla, a woman-warrior ally of Turnus, was killed in battle by Arruns, an Etruscan ally of Aeneas.

Μονομαχία του ΑΙΝΕΙΑ... Final duel between Aeneas and Turnus.Turnus, defeated, asked for his life, and Aeneas considered to pardon him.But when he saw that Turnus was wearing the baldric of Pallas, he slew him.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ.Το λιοντάρι της ΝΕΜΕΑΣ... This was Heracles' first labour.He shot the Nemean Lion with an arrow, but having perceived that the animal was invulnerable, he broke its neck with his bare hands.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΛΕΡΝΑΙΑ ΥΔΡΑ.. As a second labour Heracles was ordered by Eurystheus to kill the Lernaean hydra, a monster with nine heads, one of them being immortal.He chopped all heads, and the immortal one he buried, putting a heavy rock on it.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΕΡΥΜΑΝΘΙΟΣ ΚΑΠΡΟΣ... The illustration shows Heracles bringing the Erymanthian boar to MycenaeEurystheus, terrified at the sight, hides himself inside a bronze vessel (or inside something else, according to this artist)..

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ.και ΕΛΑΦΙ της ΑΡΤΕΜΙΔΟΣ...As a third labour Heracles was ordered to bring the Cerynitian hind alive to Mycenae.This hind had golden horns, and was sacred to Artemis.Therefore Heracles did not wish to wound it, but he nevertheless shot it just as it was about to cross a river.He then caught it and hastened through Arcadia towards Mycenae.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΣΤΥΜΦΑΛΙΔΕΣ ΟΡΝΙΘΕΣ.. Another labour consisted in chasing the man-eating birds who used their feathers as arrows.Their place of abode was the Stymphalian Lake in Arcadia.To help him in this task, Athena gave Heracles brazen castanets.By clashing these on a certain mountain that overhung the lake, he scared the birds, which could not abide the sound, but fluttered up in a fright.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΑΜΑΖΟΝΕΣ... Another labour consisted in fetching the belt of Hippolyte, queen of the AMAZONS.She had the belt of Ares for being the best among the AMAZONS.Heracles was sent to fetch it because Admete, daughter of Eurystheus, desired to get it.When he arrived to the land of the AMAZONS, a fight broke out, and Heracles killed Hippolyte, stripping her of her belt.And having defeated the rest, he sailed away to Troy and later to Mycenae, where he surrendered the belt to Eurystheus.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΣΤΑΥΛΟΙ ΤΟΥ ΑΥΓΕΙΑ... Eurystheus prescribed to carry out the dung of the cattle of King Augeas of Elis in a single day, without the assistance of any other man.Heracles, declining the task as unworthy to be done by his own hands, turned the course of the rivers Alpheus and Peneus into the stables, cleansing them by the rivers' streams.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΤΑΥΡΟΣ της ΚΡΗΤΗΣ... Eurystheus ordered to bring the Cretan Bull.Heracles then came to Crete, caught the Cretan Bull and brought it to Eurystheus, who just let it go again.The beast then, having first roamed to Sparta and Arcadia, traversed the Isthmus of Corinth and arrived at Marathon in Attica, where it pestered the inhabitants all it could.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΑΛΟΓΑ του ΔΙΟΜΗΔΗ...As yet another labour Eurystheus demanded that the MARES OF DIOMEDES (Dinus, Lampon, Podargus, and Xanthus) be brought to Mycenae.Heracles 1 came to Thrace with a group of volunteers, and after overpowering the grooms who were in charge of the stables, drove the mares to the beach.As the Bistonians in arms attacked him, Heracles defended himself, defeating them and slaying King Diomedes.Some have said that Heracles 1 killed Diomedes by throwing him to his mares, so that these devoured their master (as the illustration shows).

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΒΟΔΙΑ του ΓΗΡΥΟΝΗ... As another labour, Eurystheus ordered to fetch the Cattle of Geryon, who had the body of three men grown together and joined in one at the waist, but divided in three from the flanks and thighs.When Geryon hastened to join battle with Heracles beside a river, he was shot, losing both life and cattle.But in this illustration Heracles kills Geryon with his club.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΑΤΛΑΣ...ΜΗΛΑ των ΕΣΠΕΡΙΔΩΝ... Eurystheus ordered Heracles to fetch the Apples of the HESPERIDES, which were either in Libya or in the far north.It was on this occasion that Heracles, following Prometheus' instructions, asked Atlas to fetch the Golden Apples instead of fetching them himself.That is why for a short time the Pillars of Heaven were supported by Heracles, who relieved Atlas while he went to fetch the Golden Apples.Atlas soon returned carrying three Golden Apples, but was no longer willing to support the vault of the sky, declaring that he could deliver the fruits to Eurystheus himself.Seeing that Atlas could not be persuaded, Heracles asked him to hold the sky just for a moment while he placed a pad on his head, and when Atlas held the sky again, Heracles picked up the apples and left.In the illustration, Atlas appears holding, not the vault of the sky but the earth, on which a geographic contour, well known by later times, has been depicted.

ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ και ΚΕΡΒΕΡΟΣ... Finally Eurystheus imposed on Heracles a twelfth labour: to bring Hades' three-headed dog Cerberus from the UnderworldHaving descended to the nether world, Heracles asked Hades for Cerberus, and the god replied that he could take it if he could master it without weapons..So finding the three-headed hound at the gates of the river Acheron, he grasped it without relaxing his grip, and although the dragon in Cerberus' tail bit him, he at last gained control over the brute.Heracles returned to this world through an exit at Troezen, and after showing the hound to Eurystheus, he carried it back to the Underworld.

Ο ΦΙΛΟΚΤΗΤΗΣ στην ΛΗΜΝΟ...The wound that a snake caused Philoctetes proved to be incurable, and the stench which it produced was so difficult to endure that Agamemnon, the commander in chief of the army that had sailed against Troy, decided to get rid of Philoctetes, putting him ashore in the island of Lemnos, where he survived in the wildernesss for several years.

ΑΙΝΕΙΑΣ και ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝ... During the Trojan War, Aeneas was wounded by Diomedes and, having fainted, would have died if his mother had not come to his rescue.When on the occasion Aphrodite herself was wounded by Diomedes, Apollo took over the protection of the wounded Aeneas, removing him from the battle to the citadel of Pergamus where his temple stood.

ΙΡΙΣ...ΑΘΗΝΑ και ΗΡΑ...Iris, delivering a message from Zeus, prevents Athena and Hera from helping the Achaeans.So she said: "Whither are you twain hastening? Why is it that the hearts are mad within your breasts? The son of Cronos suffers not that you give succour to the Argives. For on this wise he threatens, even as he will bring it to pass: he will maim your swift horses beneath your chariot, and yourselves will he hurl from out the car, and will break in pieces the chariot. Ten rolling years would pass, and you be left still suffering from the wounds his thunderbolt would deal you .." (Iris to Athena and Hera. Homer, Iliad 8.415).

ΕΚΤΩΡ και ΑΝΔΡΟΜΑΧΗ... Hector leaves for battle.It is then his wife Andromache tells him: "You, Hector, are father and mother and brother to me, as well as my beloved husband. Have pity on me now; stay here in the city, and do not make your boy an orphan and your wife a widow."..Hector addresses then a vain prayer to the gods: "Grant that this boy of mine be as strong and brave as I; a mighty king of Troy."

ΑΧΙΛΛΕΑΣ και ΕΚΤΩΡ.. "Thus Hector charged, brandishing his sharp sword. Achilles sprang to meet him, inflamed with savage passion."

ΠΡΙΑΜΟΣ και ΑΧΙΛΛΕΑΣ...Priam left Troy and went to see Achilles, carrying twelve robes, twelve cloaks, twelve sheets, twelve mantles, twelve tunics, and many other gifts, to ransom the body of his son Hector 1 with.

Η ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΔΙΑ... The child Zeus is seen resting on the goat Amalthea which fed him while the CURETES in arms guarded him in the cave, clashing their spears on their shields, in order to prevent Cronos to hear his voice.

ΤΙΤΑΝΟΜΑΧΙΑ... In this scene of the Titanomachy, Zeus is seen using the thunderbolt against an unidentified monster, presumably an ally of the Titans.

ΔΙΑΣ..στον ΟΛΥΜΠΟ. Illustration showing some of the OLYMPIANS: Zeus sits on the throne, holding the thunderbolt and sending the eagle somewhere.To his left are Hera and Ares, and behind him Hermes and Athena.Hebe pours nectar to Ganymedes;behind her is a dark-haired Apollo playing his lyre.The woman in the distance could be Hestia.Heracles, already a god, rests on his club while conversing with Hephaestus.

Η ΑΡΠΑΓΗ της ΕΥΡΩΠΗΣ..Zeus the bull carries Europa away..The landscape is Phoenicia, and the girl is ferried thence to Crete.

ΔΙΑΣ στο εργαστήρι του ΗΦΑΙΣΤΟΥ... Hephaestus (with the red cap) has finished his work: the beautiful woman Pandora, whom he fashioned with earth and water.A goddess comes with the box (which was a jar) containing all evils, while Zeus contemplates the work he had ordered.Among Hephaestus' helpers, is one of the CYCLOPES.

ΔΙΑΣ και ΑΣΚΛΗΠΙΟΣ.. Zeus strikes Asclepius with a thunderbolt for raising the dead with his healing arts.A dead man is coming out from the grave, while others flee in panic.The serpent coiled around the staff is an attribute of Asclepius, who, despite this episode, is counted among the immortals.

ΟΔΥΣΣΕΑΣ και ΚΥΚΛΩΠΑΣ...As Odysseus boasts the Cyclops Polyphemus , whom he had blinded, casts stones at his ship.

ΟΔΥΣΣΕΑΣ και ΕΡΜΗΣ.. When approaching Circe's palace, Odysseus met Hermes, who, in addition to certain instructions, gave him a plant that would rob Circe's drugs of their power..

ΟΔΥΣΣΕΑΣ και ΣΕΙΡΗΝΕΣ.. Odysseus sailed past the Sirens, and since he wished to hear their lovely song and yet not be trapped by it, he stopped the ears of his comrades with wax, and ordered that he should himself be bound to the mast.And being persuaded by the Sirens to linger, he begged to be released, but they bound him tighter, until they had sailed past.

Ο ΟΔΥΣΣΕΑΣ στο Νησί της ΚΑΛΥΨΩΣ... When Calypso could not persuade Odysseus to stay with her, she, obeying the gods and keeping her oath, gave him tools and led him to the farthest part of the island, where Odysseus cut the timber down to build a raft and sail back home.

ΟΔΥΣΣΕΑΣ στο Νησί των ΦΑΙΑΚΩΝ..When Odysseus was sailing near the island of the Phaeacians, Poseidon wrecked his raft, and Odysseus found himself in the midst of mountainous waves with nothing in store for him except sudden death.It was then that the sea-goddess Leucothea assisted him saying: "Swim for your life to the Phaeacian coast .. Take this veil and wind it round your waist. With its divine protection you need not be afraid of injury or death."

ΟΔΥΣΣΕΑΣ και ΜΝΗΣΤΗΡΕΣ... Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, asked the SUITORS OF PENELOPE that they should let him have the bow and test itHaving strung the bow, he shot an arrow and hit all the marks, and then he shot the SUITORS down as well..

ΟΡΦΕΑΣ...Orpheus practised minstrelsy and by his songs moved stones and trees, holding also a spell over the wild beasts.

ΟΡΦΕΑΣ στην ΑΙΓΥΠΤΟ...Orpheus travelled to Egypt where he increased his knowledge about the gods and their initiatory rites, bringing from that country most of his mystic ceremonies, and orgiastic rites.

ΟΡΦΕΑΣ και ΑΡΓΟΝΑΥΤΕΣ... Orpheus is counted among the ARGONAUTS.When they sailed past the SIRENS, Orpheus, by chanting a counter melody restrained all of them except Butes, who swam off to the SIRENS.

ΟΡΦΕΑΣ στον ΑΔΗ...Having descended to the Underworld, Orpheus accompanied his words with the music of the lyre.He entranced Persephone by his songs, and persuaded her to help him in his desire to bring back to life his dead wife.Death and Hermes are seen standing beside the ruler of the Underworld, while Cerberus, the hound of Hades, examines Orpheus.

ΟΡΦΕΑΣ ελευθερώνει την ΕΥΡΥΔΙΚΗ... Hades promised to release Eurydice if Orpheus, on his way up, would not turn round until he came to his own house.But Orpheus forgot, and when he turned round and looked at his wife, she instantly slipped into the depths again.In this manner Orpheus lost her a second time.In the illustration, Hermes appears separating the lovers.

ΜΑΙΝΑΔΕΣ σκοτωνουν τον ΟΡΦΕΑ...According to some, Orpheus was torn in pieces by the MAENADS (but see Orpheus for other versions of his death).

ΠΕΡΣΕΑΣ... Perseus surprises the GRAEAE, who had but one eye and one tooth, which they passed to each other in turn.They would not tell him what he needed to know, but Perseus, by taking their tooth and eye, compelled them to show him the way to the NYMPHS.

ΠΕΡΣΕΑΣ και ΝΥΜΦΕΣ... The NYMPHS give Perseus a wallet, winged sandals, and the helmet of Hades, which makes invisible he who wears it.

ΠΕΡΣΕΑΣ και ΜΕΔΟΥΣΑ...Perseus, having beheaded Medusa, looks at her face not directly but on a brazen shield in order not to be turned into stone.

ΠΕΡΣΕΑΣ και ΑΤΛΑΣ... Perseus, holding the head of Medusa before Atlas, turns him into stone (the Mount Atlas).

ΠΕΡΣΕΑΣ και ΑΝΔΡΟΜΕΔΑ... Perseus rescues Andromeda, who had been exposed as a prey to the sea-monster sent by Poseidon, as a remedy to the calamities that Ethiopia was suffering.

ΠΕΡΣΕΑΣ..ΦΙΝΕΑΣ και ΑΝΔΡΟΜΕΔΑ...: While Perseus was celebrating his marriage, Phineus, who had been previously betrothed to Andromeda, appeared accusing the guest of stealing his bride.In the course of the ensuing fight, Perseus showed his rival and other ETHIOPIAN CHIEFS the head of Medusa, turning them into stone.

ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΑΣ και ΤΙΤΑΝΟΜΑΧΙΑ...Before becoming the ruler of heaven, Zeus had to defeat his predecessor Cronos and the TITANS.In this war, the Titanomachy, Prometheus, although being a titan, sided with Zeus, who is seen in the picture brandishing the thunderbolt against his enemies.

ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΑΣ και ΑΘΗΝΑ...: Prometheus moulded man out of water and earth.And since these elements would not suffice, Athena, here among the clouds, animated the moulded man by giving him a soul.

ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΑΣ... When Zeus became ruler in heaven, he purposed to destroy the race of mankind that Prometheus had created.It was then that Prometheus, out of compassion for that wretched breed of mortals, planted blind hope in their hearts, and having stolen fire from heaven(which he hid in a stalk of fennel), gave it to men.

ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΑΣ δίνει την φωτιά στους ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΥΣ... Having stolen fire from heaven, Prometheus gave it to men, teaching them many arts and handicrafts.For this, humanity has often regarded the titan as a "benefactor".Yet humans rapidly made a habit of employing Prometheus' gift to cook and burn one another in various ways.

Η Τιμωρία του ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΑ... For having stolen the fire, Prometheus paid a high price, being severely punished by the Zeus, who ordered Hephaestus to nail Prometheus' body to Mount Caucasus.On a rock in that mountain, Prometheus was kept bound for many years.And every day an eagle swooped on him and devoured the lobes of his liver, which grew by night as much as the eagle had devoured during the day.After thirty thousand years of torture, Heracles 1 was sent to kill the eagle that ate Prometheus' heart or liver, and release the prisoner.

ΚΕΝΤΑΥΡΟΣ ΧΕΙΡΩΝ και ΠΡΟΜΗΘΕΑΣ...Being a Titan, Prometheus should be immortal by birth.Yet, some affirm that Prometheus was granted immortality, after Heracles shot the Centaur Chiron with a poisoned arrow.The wound proved incurable, and Chiron wished to die, but being immortal, he could not.It was then that Prometheus offered himself to Zeus to be immortal in his stead, and the request being granted by the god, Chiron died and Prometheus obtained immortality.....
